Cydonia Images Fuel Controversy
The Cydonia
Face, which resembled a humanoid or simian face, stirred great
controversy when it was released to the public. NASA scientists
originally claimed it was a trick of lighting.

In 1979 Vincent DiPietro and Gregory Molenaar, two computer engineers
under contract at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Maryland, reanalyzed
the images and suggested they might demonstrate intelligent design.
The controversy that followed culminated in a book by Mark
Carlotto and never died down.
Other reputable scientists flatly deny the possibility that the Cydonia
structures show intelligent design and insist they are the products of
lighting or natural erosion.
Few scientists have commented on the structure immediately to the left
of the Cydonia face, a structure nicknamed the "Cydonia Turtle."
This could be because the structure less easily lends itself to a visual
interpretation.
Both advocates of intelligent design and critics of the hypothesis remain
adamant in their positions.
The Cydonia Face has become so famous that it was featured in the first
season "Space"
episode of the X-Files.*
*Ironically, this is the first X-Files episode I ever
taped for my library.
